The Science and Technology Facilities Council is an independent public body sponsored by the Office of Science and Innovation. It operates world-class large-scale research facilities and manages international research projects in support of a broad cross-section of the UK research community.

Science and Technology Facilities Council was created from predecessor organisations which in turn changed their names and structure frequently. Throughout these changes a high quality service has been maintained.

Since the early 1960s the organisations that now constitute the Science and Technology Facilities Council have provided significant computing facilities to UK science. These have included world-class computing power, networking, digital storage, as well as staff to provide not only professional support for the administration of these facilities, but also to develop applications for users.

As computing costs have dramatically reduced, universities, then departments and now individuals can meet their own regular computing needs. The STFC e-Science Centre continues to anticipate and meet exceptional large scale needs, and the interoperability challenges required for collaboration between research teams, particularly in the interdisciplinary research which is expected by policy makers to yield major breakthroughs.
